Academics
The Department of Applied Foreign Languages was established in 1950. The principal mission of the department is to teach English to the cadets of the ROC Military Academy. In this era of globalization and military partnerships with foreign armies, we must assist our students to achieve a level of comprehension that meets the needs of the ROC Army.We also offer courses in Spanish and other languages, as need dictates.
Our secondary goal is test preparation. Since test preparation is an unavoidable part of qualifying for some specific training or education opportunities, we help our students to raise their scores on various standardized tests. Additionally, our department is responsible for the entire academic preparation of students to study abroad.
We take an active role in the day-to-day lives of our students in order to introduce more English to them in a more natural environment. Initiatives include clubs, competitions, and other activities that students can participate in. We are currently working to expand our capabilities to include more computer-assisted instruction and testing.
We have added three more computer labs to our department in order to meet the growing need for classrooms capable of facilitating hi-tech instruction techniques. Through our partnership with the Virginia Military Institute, we have the opportunity to bring a VMI graduate to our Academy as an assistant teacher. Devon Miller was the first person to hold this position and joined our faculty from September of 2002 until June of 2004. His dedication to our students and hard work won the recognition of senior officers, including the Commander-in-Chief of the ROC Army who awarded him a Meritorious Service Award in 2003.
