Off-Campus Visits Day 1:

We had the privilege of visiting the College of
Foreign Languages and Literatures at Tamkang University. We are honored to
participate in an extraordinary academic and cultural exchange session with the
university’s faculty and students. During the visit, a lecturer from Tamkang
University shared her invaluable experiences as a tour guide in Barcelona, Spain,
showing us her love to Barcelona.

Drawing on her extensive knowledge and rich
experiences, the lecturer provided a detailed introduction to Barcelona’s
history, art, and architectural wonders. From Gaudí’s iconic masterpiece, the
Sagrada Família, the Picasso Museum to the historic Gothic Quarter, every
aspect of the city revealed its multifaceted cultural depth. She emphasized
that Barcelona is not merely a city of world-renowned landmarks but also a
treasure trove where culture and daily life intricately intertwine.

Beyond the well-known landmarks and bustling
markets, the lecturer highlighted the unique festivals and cultural features of
Barcelona. The streets of Barcelona are imbued with an artistic atmosphere,
home to creative shops such as bookstores, handmade leather workshops, and cozy
cafés, while reflecting the leisurely lifestyle of the locals. Walking through
these areas, one can truly feel the vibrant and diverse pulse of the city.

The lecturer also described the Gothic Quarter
as the historical heart of Barcelona bears over two thousand years of relics
and to witness the city’s evolution from the Roman era to the present.
Meanwhile, the Gràcia district, with its artistic ambiance, brings new life
into the city. Those elements present a deep sense of admiration toward
Barcelona.

During the session, the lecturer also touched
upon Spain’s unique culinary culture, particularly Tapas, which serve as a
distinctive culinary highlight. Through this diverse small-plate dining
culture, we gained insights into the eating habits and lifestyle of the locals.
This seamless blend of cuisine, art, and history showcases the city’s charm and
allows us to rediscover Barcelona from multiple perspectives and reconsider the
values of language learning and cultural exchange.

This visit provided not only an enrichment of
knowledge but also a heightened cultural awareness. Through the lecturer’s
vivid storytelling, we deeply felt the intrinsic connection between language
and culture, sparking a greater desire to explore the world and its diverse
cultures.

Off-Campus Visits Day 2

On the second day of our visit, we traveled to
the National Defense University (NDU) located in Fuxinggang, Beitou. We had the
opportunity to visit the College of International and National Defense Affairs
(INDAC), National Development course (MOFA), and National Defense University
Language Center. This enlightening and inspiring journey offered us a deeper
understanding of the significance and multifaceted aspects of national defense
education.

First Stop: College of International and
National Defense Affairs (INDAC) at National Defense University

Our first stop was the College of International
and National Defense Affairs (INDAC). From the moment we stepped into the
college, we were required to communicate entirely in English, immersing us in
an internationalized academic environment. Associate Professor Yau introduced
the college’s background and mission, explaining that the college is dedicated
to advancing research on national security and strategies while cultivating
outstanding military officers in international security and negotiation skills.
The college includes the Graduate Institute of Strategic Studies and the
Graduate Institute of International Security, providing a diverse educational
platform to enhance defense diplomacy and military-civilian exchanges.

Professor Yau also highlighted the increasing
military threats from China, including cyber warfare and cognitive operations,
which aim to weaken our defensive capabilities. He encouraged the students of
the college and us to seize the opportunity for rigorous academic training to
strengthen philosophical thinking, master scientific methods, and integrate
philosophy, science, and military strategy to support decision-making and
fulfill the mission of national defense readiness. This insightful session gave
us a deeper appreciation for the academic depth of defense education and an
understanding that national defense research requires not only tactical
considerations but also strategic thinking about the country’s future security
and development.

Second Stop: National Development Course (MOFA)

Next, we visited the National Development Course
(MOFA), where the director guided us through the facilities and explained its
significance. This course plays a critical role in fostering international
collaboration with democratic nations to maintain regional peace and stability.
The director emphasized that National Development Course (MOFA) actively
promotes progress and development among participating nations and serves as a
key force in advancing global peace and stability.

The curriculum of the course encompasses
international affairs, strategic cooperation, and cultural exchange, fostering
mutual understanding and support among participating countries. This effort not
only strengthens Taiwan’s diplomatic capabilities but also contributes to the
broader cause of global peace. The major role in bridging nations through
education and dialogue left a profound impression upon us.

Third Stop: National Defense University Language
Center

Our final stop was the National Defense
University Language Center, where we listened to a presentation by Director
Chen. Fluent in both English and Arabic, and with extensive overseas
experience, Director Chen shared his journey and encouraged us to continuously
enhance our language skills and professional expertise. He emphasized that
language learning is not just a tool for communication but also a key to
understanding different cultures and building international connections. He
inspired us to develop a global perspective and leverage language skills to
broaden our horizons.

We also learned about the National Defense
University Language Center’s diverse educational resources, including practical
training for overseas assignments and cultural language courses designed to
meet various communication needs. The center aims to cultivate talents with
exceptional international communication abilities, contributing to the nation’s
diplomatic and defense efforts.

Reflection

This visit provided us with a profound
understanding of the importance of national defense education. From research on
international security to promoting multilateral cooperation and enhancing
language proficiency, each stop demonstrated NDU’s dedication to nurturing
talents, strengthening national defense, and fostering international
collaboration.

Moreover, I realized that whether it is through

language learning or strategic studies, only by pursuing excellence and
accumulating professional knowledge can we truly contribute to our nation’s
future. This visit was not just an academic inspiration but also an experience
that broadened our global perspective and deepened our appreciation for
national defense education.
